marie macdonald >>> good evening, i'm allen martin. >> i'm dana king. we are keeping an "eye on the storm" on this wet and windy wednesday. this is video from san francisco this morning when the rain came down really hard all across the bay area. things have cleared up since then but it's just a brief break in a series of storms. >> all that rain earlier today increased the danger on the roads. signs warn drivers to slow down on highway 17 because of the slippery wet roads heading into the mountains to santa cruz and scotts valley. we spotted a few wrecks on the roads today. a fender-bender on highway 87 in san jose clogged traffic for miles. the crash involved at least three vehicles but we haven't heard of serious injuries. >> this is what it looked like going over the bay bridge into san francisco this morning. a lot of wind, rain and plenty of brake lights. we have team coverage of the storm and its aftermath as we wait for round 2. linda yee is in daly city.da lin is in san francisco. paul deanno reports from the weather center. >> this is round one soft least rainy of t

congressional correspondent miss dana bash. dana? republicans say president obama's opening offer is, you know, all take and no give here. do they feel like the president is wasting their time? >> reporter: yes. they do. and, you know, a lot of times when we see this kind of toing and froing in public, don, it masks what is really going on behind the scenes, which is real negotiating. so i asked that question of john boehner, who has been through this kind of negotiating many, many times over many years, if that's what we're seeing or if we're at a stalemate. listen to this . the past 24 hours, is this the necessary public posturing that needs to go on to get an endgame or is there serious stalemate right now? >> there is a stalemate. let's not kid ourselves. i'm not trying to make this more difficult, but if you watched me over the last three weeks, i've been very girded in what i have to say because i don't want to make it harder for me or the president or members of both parties to be able to find common ground. but when i come out the day after the election, and make it clear that republic

in his second term." what kind of negotiating style are you referring to? >> like dana is saying, we're in the posturing stage of this right now. the president, for his proposal was a posture that says, i won. i won. i won. here's where i want to take things. and it started from a very left, liberal direction, stimulus money included. he knows republicans oppose that kind of spending. we assumed the final deal will include about $1 trillion in tax increases of some kind. so the president said i'm going to start with the idea of 1.6 trillion because that's where he's like trying to make the opening deal from the left. then the compromise will be around the 1 trillion, 1.2 trillion trillion 800 billion zone. in 2011 he and john boehner had a deficit deal on the table that a lot of democrats didn't like. right now he's gaining democratic support even more than at the campaign. this proposal democrats alike, there was a meeting on the hill about the proposal. democrats were delighted. you saw john boehner complaining about it. that's what the president wants because we're in the posturin

feeling now? i saw one of my colleagues tweeted a -- i don't get the "washington post," but dana milbank said republicans are raising a white flag as big as a bed sheet. is that how you see it? >> it is interesting if you look at the negotiations that president obama offered this massive tax increase with no concessions and this sort of outrageous request on the debt limit which was a really aggressive first offer. and then the republican s countered with a moderate reasonable plan exactly modeled after a proposal by erskine bowles. so if you're trying to handicap the negotiations, you'd have to concede that dana is on to something. >> really. so -- >> at least like the starting point. so basically the starting point for the republicans is what president obama probably would have viewed as a victory if they had the negotiation. >> yeah, he wanted another 400 supposed supposedly. how does simpson-bowles get to -- how does it raise revenue? what's the number that it raises? >> well, it depends because they have a bunch of different simpson-bowles plans. like in the bowles-simpson report, t

. leading member of the tea party. he'll take over the head of the heritage foundation. cnn's dana bash live on capitol hill with more. why did senator demint decide to step down? >> we're trying to get more information from his aides. maybe find him in the hallways here. it's a bit of a surprise because demint has felt that he's been able to be effective here in congress because he has been kind of a conservative very willing to push his own leadership in ways that often times they don't want to be pushed with regard to deficit reduction, with regard to strict fiscal policy. that's by far his number one issue. i can tell you he's also really angered republican leaders over the past two election cycles by raising millions of dollars, a lot of money, for republican candidates who "establishment" thought were less able to win the general election. he is a purist. he's an anti-tax, anti-government purist. it does seem that he's kind of had it here. he wouldn't be the only one to say that they don't feel they can get enough done from the inside and it's probably better to go to the house. we'll
